Smoking Can Make Dental Implants Impossible

Posted on 10/15/2019 by Dr. Karl Zeren
Smoking Can Make Dental Implants ImpossibleIf you want to ever get dental implants, you need to stop smoking today. This is because smoking can make it very difficult, if not impossible, to install dental implants.

Even if the implants can be installed successfully, smoking can make them fail later. Studies have shown that those who smoke have a much higher failure rate than those who don't—they're nearly 15 times more likely to have their implants fail!

Smoking and Your Mouth

Dental implants are placed in your jaw bone and serve as anchors for the fake teeth placed on top of them. When you smoke, you put your gums and jaw at risk of infection and damage. It's possible that smoking has contributed to jaw bone shrinkage, leaving you with a weak jaw that can't support implants. This may be solved with bone grafts, but even grafting isn't always a solution. Smoking can make gingivitis and other conditions worse, too. We have to treat those conditions before we can install implants.

Smoking Post-Implants

If your jaw is strong enough to support implants or if you had bone grafts, you need to stop smoking. If you don't, your mouth may not heal up as quickly. Smoking also puts you at a greater risk of developing an infection around the implants. When this happens, your body may reject the implant because it will see it as part of the source of the infection. You may go through bone grafts and implant surgery only to have the implant fail and be removed. It's possible to go through several dental procedures to get implants only to end up with dentures.

If you want to get implants, you need to have the best oral health possible before the procedure. If you're not sure how to improve your oral health, we're here to help! Stop smoking, then come in and talk to us about implants.

We appreciate all that you do
