Those with Higher Cholesterol Often Struggle with Gum Disease, Too

Those with Higher Cholesterol Often Struggle with Gum Disease, TooGum disease can cause a number of health problems, many of which aren't even in your mouth. While the disease does affect your gums, teeth, and overall oral health first, if it's not dealt with, it can spread to the lungs and other parts of your body.

But the opposite is also true. Conditions that start in other parts of your body can impact your gums. High cholesterol, for example, can play a part in gum disease.

How Are They Connected?
When people talk about the dangers of high cholesterol, they usually think about stroke, heart attack, and other forms of heart disease. They rarely think of other parts of the body, but high cholesterol can impact many other conditions. When your cholesterol is high, your arteries become clogged, making it difficult for blood to flow to where it needs to be.

Gum disease, likewise, leads to inflammation in the gums, making it hard for blood to flow through them. If you're dealing with both of these issues, it's very likely that your gums and teeth are not getting the proper amount of oxygen and nutrients that they need.

Studies have also shown that people who have gum disease tend to be more at risk of heart disease, while those who treat their gum disease are often less at risk. Another study looked at specific high cholesterol medications and how they impact the teeth and gums. The results indicated that medications designed to help treat high cholesterol also helped with gum disease, indicating a link between the two.
