Ways of Keeping Your Gums Safe from Further Gum Recession

Ways of Keeping Your Gums Safe from Further Gum RecessionGum recession is when your gums pull away from your gums. It's usually caused by gum disease. Once this happens to your gums they won't grow back naturally.

Understanding Gum Disease

Gum disease is caused by the buildup of plaque around your teeth. This plaque is mainly composed of bacteria that can cause your gums to become inflamed. Once this happens, they'll start to draw back, which is another way of saying that your gums are receding. Unfortunately, this is something that you need to deal with right away before more advanced inflammation occurs. When gum disease is left untreated, small spaces or pockets will start to form around your teeth. This is essentially what happens when your gums pull away from your teeth.

Treating Gum Disease

When your gums have only mildly receded, we can perform a deep cleaning to help them. This deep cleaning is what's known as a tooth scaling and root planning. During this procedure, we will remove any tartar and plaque that have built up in this area of your mouth. We will also smooth out your tooth's root once it's been exposed.

If you have pockets that remain inflamed after we've performed this procedure, you may need surgery to conduct gum grafts. This will make sure that you have gums securely holding your teeth – something that's important so your tooth doesn't become weak and fall out of your mouth.

After your gums are restored to good health, you'll want to make sure you brush and floss your teeth twice daily. It's also important to follow up with an anti-gingivitis mouthwash. You will also want to make sure to maintain regular appointments with us at least twice a year. Whether you're ready to have your gums restored or have already had this procedure and you need a routine cleaning and checkup, we're here for you. Give us a call to schedule an appointment soon.
