How Treating Gum Disease Can Aid in Weight Loss

How Treating Gum Disease Can Aid in Weight LossUnfortunately, there are many people who suffer from gum disease today. Many of these people are overweight. This has led researchers to investigate the correlation between obesity and gum disease.

In doing so, researchers have found that when you don't have as many fat cells in your body, you're better able to fight off gum disease.

What Studies Show About Gum Disease and Weight Loss

One of the largest studies in this regard took 31 obese people who had gum disease into consideration. While half of this population had an average BMI (body mass index), 39 of whom had undergone gastric bypass surgery in which their abdomen's fat cells were removed. These people did better than the control group whose BMI was 35 and didn't have gastric bypass surgery.

What's so intriguing about this research is that most of the people who underwent gastric bypass surgery, also saw a decrease in their glucose levels. This is good news for diabetics, especially those with insulin-related issues.

Everyone underwent nonsurgical gum disease treatment consisting of scaling and root planning. They were also taught how to improve their oral hygiene at home. This helped everyone's gums improve, but those who had gastric bypass surgery did even better here as well.

The Importance of This Research

This research is important because untreated inflammation in your body has harmful effects the longer it's allowed to linger there. Inflammation in the form of gum disease will eventually lead to tooth loss. It can also enter your bloodstream and cause things like premature birth, heart disease, diabetes, and arthritis. This is why it's so important to have gum disease caught and treated early on.
