If You Lower Your Cholesterol, It May Also Protect You From Getting Gum Disease

If You Lower Your Cholesterol, It May Also Protect You From Getting Gum DiseaseWhen you're prescribed statins for lowering your cholesterol, you may be adding additional protection for your oral health too. This is something that researchers have recently discovered. Understanding this study has great implications for you.

What Gum Disease Is

Gum disease is the result of toxins that the bacteria in plaque secrete. Over the course of time this accumulates along your gum line. Once it's there it can start doing damage. This is because your gums (soft tissue a.k.a. gingiva) have become inflamed. This inflammation can result in the abnormal loss of bone surrounding your teeth, which is never good since this is what holds your teeth in place. To stop this entire process from happening you must maintain good oral hygiene at all times.

What Finnish Research Says

According to this study, over half of adults today are suffering from some type of gum disease. In this study, 100 patients 40-years-old and over were treated for it. Those who were involved in this study and who were also prescribed statins had 37% less periodontal pockets and 43% less inflammation. This is important because when periodontal pockets are left untreated, they become a source of persistent inflammation.

Eventually, this can result in such diseases as rheumatoid arthritis and even cardiovascular disease. All this is because the inflammatory burden on your body has been increased. With these results in mind, it's possible that new therapeutic ways of treating gum disease will be developed.
